THE CREATIVE CORNER: JAVIER BALLESTEROS

The legacy of an icon who changed the game, told by the person who knew him best.

Growing up as Severiano Ballesteros’ son meant growing up with a legend as a role model, but also with a real person behind the myth. Javier Ballesteros has devoted part of his life to keeping his father’s legacy alive through the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, while also following in his footsteps on the golf course. In this conversation, we look at what remains of Seve’s creative spirit today, the projects the Foundation is currently working on, and what it means for Javier to see his father’s legacy brought to life through a collaboration with Jimmy Lion.

1. Seve is considered one of the most creative and unpredictable players golf has ever produced. Where do you think that unique way of playing came from?

He started playing with a 3-iron on the beach and sneaking into the Pedreña Golf Club at night. I think that gives a pretty clear idea of where he developed that very special skill.

2. He himself described golf as "a magnificent and very peculiar game." What do you think he meant?

I think golf teaches you many lessons without you asking for them, and over an 18-hole course you go through every possible mood.

3. Beyond the titles and trophies, how would you describe your father's legacy in a few words?

He inspired many people to play golf and made a difference in many people's lives, whether by helping them or simply making them happy through his game. People still write to me telling me they named their son Seve after my father. Others tell me their wife wouldn't let them name their son Seve, but their dog or cat is named Seve. There are countless stories and anecdotes.

To this day, many people write to me saying that my father inspired them, that they started playing golf thanks to him or that they shared a moment with him and, after so many years, they still remember it as something exceptional and wonderful.

4. Is there an anecdote or memory that best sums up what Seve was really like?

I have countless memories of my father, but if there's one thing that always comes to mind, it's how affectionate he was with us and the time he dedicated to the three of us.

5. What did you feel when they first proposed paying tribute to Seve's figure and spirit through a collaboration with Jimmy Lion?

I was very curious and excited to see what we could create together. I had already bought several pairs of socks and a Jimmy Lion t-shirt before, and I really liked the brand.

6. For those unfamiliar with the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, could you share what it does and its primary mission today?

The Seve Ballesteros Foundation pursues two core missions: funding critical brain cancer research, and introducing golf along with its core values to younger generations.

7. Across everything the Foundation does, is there a project particularly close to your heart?

Without question, Golf in Hospitals is the initiative dearest to me. Partnering with the Aladina Foundation, we run an ongoing program supporting pediatric cancer patients. The goal is to make hospital stays a bit lighter and, even if only for an afternoon, bring laughter and normal kid moments through golf.

Alongside hospital clinics and virtual sessions, we organize field trips to local golf courses every few months. Once a year, several families also travel up to Pedreña for a weekend getaway to see where my father was born and raised.

It's hard to fathom the hardships these kids and families endure, but witnessing their smiles, seeing them having a blast and forgetting about hospital routines for a while brings us profound joy. I know my father would be deeply proud to see his Foundation championing a cause like this.

8. In addition to your Foundation involvement, you're also part of All In Sports Group. Can you tell us a bit about your work there?

I've been with All In Sports for around three years. It's a boutique Spanish sports agency. I focus on our golf roster, but we also represent athletes across tennis, padel, and football.

In a nutshell, our day-to-day involves securing sponsorship deals for our talent and navigating their careers so they can keep 100% of their focus on training and winning tournaments.

To finish, a few rapid-fire questions on Cantabria:

  • A restaurant you always return to: Bodega del Riojano.

  • A walk you take when you need to think: Along the beach.
  • Where to listen to good music, live or otherwise: At the gym while I work out.
  • A beach worth stopping to admire: El Puntal.
  • A hole at Pedreña Golf Club that you particularly like: It's hard to choose just one. I like the 2nd and the 7th, two great par 3s, and the 14th for its views.
  • That place in Cantabria that still amazes you: Pedreña. There's no better place in the world.

And to finish: describe Jimmy Lion in three words: Opportunity, ambition, and closeness.
